Saturday at the Colorado high school state championships both title winning teams did so for the second year in a row.

Fossil Ridge won one relay and one individual event on their way to the team’s second consecutive state title. The boys scored 331.5 points while runner up Regis Jesuit registered 252 points. Kris Malinin, Shamzi Alkaff, Mason Fine, and Craig Heimark combined for a 1:24.55 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Danny Kovac claimed the 100 backstroke title in 49.69. In that event, Gabriele Sassia of Highland’s Ranch finished in 50.15 and Ty Coen of Regis Jesuit was third with a 51.61. Sasia went on to win the 100 butterfly in 49.32, ahead of Regis Jesuit’s Ty Coen and Fossil Ridge’s Sam Ybarra (50.69).

Regis Jesuit also won one relay and one individual event on the way to their runner up finish. Coen, Elijah Warren, Simon Barshay, and Alexander Stepman clocked a 1:31.88 to win the 200 medley relay. Warren topped the 100 breaststroke in 54.82. Greeley West’s Brody Lewis finished in 56.91, and Andrew Weiss of Rampart touched third in 57.13.

Boulder’s Chris Nicholson won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.85. Griffin Eiber of Arapahoe was second in 1:39.88. Greeley West’s Brody Lewis touched third in 1:41.34. Eiber was then first to the wall in the 100 freestyle (45.07). Chris Nicholson of Boulder touched second in 45.12 and Hunter Fuqua of Cherry Creek completed the podium in 46.58.

Fairview’s Michael Zarian was first to the wall in the 200 IM in 1:49.98. Kovac was runner up in 1:50.56, while Warren touched third in 1:52.93. Zarian then won the 500 freestyle in 4:34.45, ahead of Boulder teammates Nathan Rock in 4:40.27 and Quinton Pierce in 4:42.36.

In the 50 freestyle, Max Grogan of Ponderosa was first to the wall in 21.04. Pomona’s Anthony Laurita out touched Malinin 21.36 to 21.38 for second place.

Boulder ended the meet with a relay win when Nicholson, PJ Stapleton, Mick Bartholomew, and Nathan Rock stopped the clock in 3:06.21.

On the boards, Octavio Lucrero of Bear Creek scored 604.65 points, well ahead of Arapahoe’s Caleb Ives with 535.30 points. Smoky Hill’s Devin Bellamy completed the podium with 532.05 points.

Cheyenne Mountain claimed the school’s second consecutive state title on Saturday. They won two relays on their way to 358 total points, ahead of Valor Christian’s 259 point total.

In the opening 200 medley relay, Jerry Birnbaum, Gabe Grauvogel, Brayden Love, and Kaiden Kimball combined for a 1:37.32, while Birnbaum, Harrison Buckley, Westin Stieglitz, and Kyle Leach took the 400 freestyle relay title with a 3:08.08.

Leach was an individual winner for Cheyenne Mountain, when he stopped the clock at 1:39.41 in the 200 freestyle. Thompson Valley’s Liam Gately finished second in 1:40.41 and third went to Air Academy’s Griffin Ayotte in 1:41.68.

Caleb Hicks of Air Academy clocked a 4A state record of 49.19 to win the 100 butterfly. Love earned second in 49.63. Golden High School’s Daric Sundeen finished third in 50.94.

In the 100 breaststroke, Love finished in 56.22, just ahead of Hicks in 56.39 and D’Evelyn’s Jack Moranetz in 59.63.

Samuel Willett of Silver Creek won the 200 IM in 1:53.16. Mullen’s Blayze Jessen finished second in 1:54.13 and freshman Ryan Peterson of Wheat Ridge was third in 1:55.15. Willett was a double winner with his 51.15 100 backstroke. Sundeen finished runner up in 51.83 and Birnbaum touched third in 51.95.

Air Academy’s Tommy Baker out touched Denver South’s Keegan Bundy 20.93 to 20.96 to win the state title in the 50 freestyle. Estes Park’s Austin Park completed the podium in 21.41. Baker completed the sprint sweep with a 44.70 in the 100. Denver South’s Keegan Bundy was the runner up in 45.41 and Silver Creek’s Noah Jepson placed third in 46.73.

Thompson Valley teammates Gately and Christopher Eddy finished in 4:33.71 and 4:35.31 to top the 500 freestyle podium. Cheyenne Mountain’s Leach completed the podium in 4:36.72.

Air Academy took the 200 freestyle relay crown with the team of Baker, Hicks, Zach Reeder, and Griffin Ayotte in 1:25.51.

On the boards, Casey Fellows took the state title with his 530.30 points for Valor Christian. Estes Park’s Jacob Bielmaier scored 501.80 points. Tristan Gess registered 456.00 points for third for Green Mountain.
