Emily Cordovi, Miguel Cancel Lead Gulliver Prep to Florida 2A Titles

Gulliver Prep took home the girls’ and boys’ Florida 2A State Championship titles last night. The girls did so in dominating fashion while the boys secured a narrow victory.

Girls

Emily Cordovi, Olivia Hernandez, Alicia Mancilla, and Sarah Abril opened the meet with a winning 1:47.08 in the 200 medley relay. Mosley’s Molly Grace Bradford, Sophee Beall, Elizabeth Fisher, and Madeline McKim were two seconds behind in 1:49.45. Another two seconds back was Holy Names’ Katie Taulbee, Sierra Wills, Bella Kirkpatrick, and Lara Lontoc (1:51.05).

Gulliver Prep swept the relays but only claimed two individual event titles. Cordovi posted a 54.67 to take the 100 butterfly, ahead of Wesley Chapel’s Abbey Duncan (55.31) and Wolfson’s Hannah Sykes (55.64). In the 100 backstroke Cordovi stopped the clock in 56.34 and Duncan recorded a 56.98. Tavares’ Mimi Filkin touched in 57.38.

American Heritage junior Catharine Cooper swept the sprint freestyle events with a 52.31 second 100 and a 23.34 in the 50. Bishop Kenny’s Taylor Radcliffe (24.44) and Cardinal Gibbons’ Savannah Yates (24.47) also medaled in the 50. In the 100 she was joined on the podium by Abril (53.03) and Lecanto’s Sophia Macaisa (53.16).

Bayshore sophomore Ryley Ober dominated the 200 freestyle with a 1:48.98. Finishing second and third were a pair of juniors: Lemon Bay’s Hunter Scott (1:51.41) and Gulliver Prep’s Mancilla (1:55.43). Ober also topped the 500 freestyle (4:52.20) though this time she was pushed by Gulliver Prep’s Marcella Rupert-Gomez (4:53.69). Mancilla (4:56.13) also made the podium.

Tarpon Springs’ Mackenzie Stumpf (2:03.14) won the 200 IM ahead of Isabella Penkwitz (2:05.44) and Ruppert-Gomez (2:06.16). Stumpf was also victorious in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:02.60. Yates (1:04.63) and Stanton’s Callie Sellers (1:06.50) finished second and third.

Abril, Chloe Hernandez, Saniela Luchau, and Brooke Ellis won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.74, just a quarter second faster than Holy Names’ Gabby Delp, Bella Kirkpatrick, Katie Taulbee, and Lara Lontoc (1:38.99).

Cordovi, Abril, Mancilla, and Ellis won the 400 freestyle relay by over five seconds in 3:34.06. Gulliver Prep scored 322 points while Academy of Holy Names reigned in 159 and Titusville was third with 143.

Boys

The Gulliver Prep boys won three individual events and one relay on their way to their state title. They started the night with a 200 medley runner up finish from Trahern Gribble, Jonathan Rodriguez, Orest Danyliv, and Pablo Luchau (1:37.19). Arnold’s Alex Phlegar, Chad McGuire, Keenan Williams, and Nicholas Gobel (1:35.23) won the event. Jesuit’s Tyler Carreja, Chris Jennings, Ray Petrus, and Stephen Dawes secured third with a 1:37.23.

Miguel Cancel snagged two of Gulliver Prep’s individual wins. He stopped the clock in 1:48.25 in the 200 IM, two seconds ahead of Fort Walton Beach’s Daniel Orcutt (1:50.40). Paxon’s Tyler Watson (1:52.11) was third. Cancel later edged Bayshore’s TC Smith 4:24.99 to 4:25.33 to take the 500 freestyle. Jesuit’s Brendan Driscoll (4:32.05) placed third.

Gulliver Prep’s other individual winner was Gribble with a 49.83 100 butterfly. Paxon’s Tyler Watson (50.68) and American Heritage’s Sebastian Vargas (50.87) placed third.

Earlier in the meet Smith won the 200 freestyle with a 1:39.46 ahead of Lakewood High’s Ethan Long (1:40.44) and Tarpon Springs’ Adam Tapia (1:41.67).

Gulf High school’s Manden Smith took both sprint freestyle titles. He posted a 20.69 in the 50 freestyle and stopped the clock in 45.74 in the 100. Lakewood High’s Ethan Long was second in the 100 (46.21) ahead of St. Brendan’s Irvin Hoost (46.39). Hoost (20.89) was the 50 runner up and Gulf Breeze’s Anthony Davis (21.29) took bronze.

Fort Walton Beach’s Daniel Orcutt (50.17) out touched South Lake’s Conor Lynch (50.20) in the 100 backstroke. Gribble finished third (51.52).

Land O’Lakes’ Jabari Ramsey (56.86) won the 100 breaststroke. Arnold’s Chad McGuire (57.30) and Cape Coral High’s Jonah Martinez (58.94) were second and third.

The 200 freestyle relay went to Jesuit’s Chris Jennings, Stephen Dawes, and Will and Sam Sands (1:26.61). Gulliver Prep wrapped up the meet with a 400 freestyle relay win as Trahern, Luchau, Danyliv, and Cancel posted a 3:07.31.

Gulliver Prep scored 234 points, just nine more than Arnold’s 225. Jesuit (220) was another five points behind for third.
