Elise Haan, Coleman Stewart Lead Charlotte Ultra Swim Prelims on Friday Morning

Friday morning’s session of the 2018 Charlotte Ultra Swim got off to a good start with NC State swimmers Elise Haan and Coleman Stewart getting some solid times in. Thursday featured the 50 shootouts and Friday was the first day of classic prelims and finals in Olympic events.

The meet is not a part of the TYR Pro Swim Series but it is still hosting a good variety of top swimmers in the Southeast. There are a good number of swimmers from the ACC and the University of Georgia as well as various club swimmers in the state of North Carolina.

Elise Haan swam a 1:01.30 in the heats of the 100 back ahead of fellow Wolfpack Elite member Alexia Zevnik (1:02.60) and another ACC swimmer Megan Moroney (1:02.79) from Virginia.

NCAA Champion Coleman Stewart made his long course debut this summer with a 56.10 in the 100 back heats ahead of fellow NC State guys Hennessey Stuart (56.13) and Justin Ress (56.28). NC State also had Jacob Molacek (57.28) place fifth and Noah Hensley (58.19) in eighth. 15-year-old Timothy Connery from Swim MAC Carolina is the fourth seed at 56.64.

Duke’s Isabella Paez had the fastest 200 fly of the morning with a 2:13.71 ahead of Virginia’s Paige Madden (2:15.81) and Georgia’s Caitlin Casazza (2:15.95). National Junior Team member Madison Homovich is the fourth seed with a 2:18.43.

Georgia’s Camden Murphy swam a 2:02.68 in the 200 fly heats as he is ahead of fellow Athens Bulldog Swim Club member Tal Davis (2:04.10). Marlins of Raleigh’s Zachary Brown is the third seed at 2:05.16. Notably, South Carolina’s Fynn Minuth (2:06.28) is the seventh seed going in to finals tonight.

Jaclyn Schoening representing the YMCA of the Triangle Area had the number one seed in the 100 breast heats with a 1:11.14. Schoening is ahead of Gamecock’s Rachel Bernhardt (1:11.50) and Wolfpack Elite’s Olivia Calegan (1:11.56).

Queens grad Nic Eriksson is the top seed in the 100 breast going in to finals tonight as he swam a 1:03.21 in the prelims ahead of 15-year-old Timothy Connery (1:03.80) and 25-year-old Marko Blazevski (1:03.92). Connery is one of three teenagers in tonight’s A-final as there is a good number of older guys in the final. Eriksson is 24 years of age.

Kate Moore, the younger sister of NC State All-American Hannah Moore, is the top seed in the 400 free as she swam a 4:20.08 in the heats. Moore leads a tight field separated by less than two seconds. Georgia’s Jordan Stout (4:20.26), Virginia’s Paige Madden (4:20.80) and Georgia’s Veronica Burchill (4:20.97) all were 4:20’s in the prelims as the rest of the women in the top eight were 4:21 including Georgia commit Madison Homovich (4:21.03).

Tennessee Aquatics’ Walker Higgins cruised to a 4:00.06 in the 400 free heats as he leads NC State’s Anton Ipsen (4:00.15) and NC State commit Ross Dant (4:00.27).

South Carolina’s Emily Barksdale (2:17.98) leads the 200 IM heats ahead of Marlins of Raleigh’s Julia Poole (2:19.35) and Kate Moore (2:21.55).

15-year-old Timothy Connery had a busy morning as he qualified for three A-finals tonight and he is the top seed in the 200 IM with a 2:06.54 morning swim. He is ahead of Nova’s Frederick Schubert (2:08.55) and Swim MAC teammate Chase Allen (2:09.90).
