Eastside Sweeps South Carolina 4A State Titles

South Carolina High School state meets continued with 4A action this morning. The Eastside boys ran away with the meet, totaling 497.5 points. South Aiken finished second with 378.5 points. The Eastside girls edged South Aiken 384 to 367.

Girls

Eastside got the meet off to a strong start as they dominated the 200 medley relay. Riley ParkerKirkley NorwoodCara Bognar, and Casey Harrison touched in 1:49.48.

Parker was also victorious in the 200 free. She led three women under two minutes with her 1:54.01.

Anna Havens Rice of Greenville was well ahead of the field in the 200 IM with her 2:03.50. She also posted a 1:04.81 in the 100 breaststroke for her second state title of the afternoon.

AC Flora’s Meagan Robins cruised ahead of the competition in the 100 fly, finishing in 57.62.

Berkeley’s Sarah Mundy stopped the clock in 24.11 to claim 50 freestyle gold. Also under 25 was Kate Beckish (24.52) from Wren. Mundy made it a sprint double with a 52.06 in the 100 free. Dreher’s Hayley Mason (52.31) was on her tail. Mason hopped back up in the 500 free. She and Eastside’s Cara Bognar raced over 20 seconds ahead of the field. It was Mason in the end, finishing in 5:03.03 to Bognar’s 5:03.85.

Bognar’s teammate Riley Parker posted a 58.42 to win the 100 back. Kater Wolff of St. James was runner up with a 58.61.

Dreher’s Eliza CateJane KockEleanor Wachtel, and Mason touched in 1:41.47 for 200 freestyle relay victory. In the 400 freestyle relay Greenville’s Rice, Virginia McNairSydney Richmond, and Isabella Hall were first to the wall in 3:43.01.

Boys

AC Flora edged Eastside for the 200 medley relay title. Tanner and Emerson Edwards teamed up with Cole Teas and Will Higgins to touch in 1:39.47. Eastside’s Daim WeaverJoseph BrooksLuke Smith, and Thomas Hicks finished with a 1:39.68.

Brooks later cleared two minutes in the 200 IM. He earned the state title with a 1:59.08.

Kevin Geist from Hilton Head stopped the clock in 1:45.34 to win the 200 free. Also well ahead of the field was Smith with a 1:47.86. Geist returned to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, when he touched in 51.37. This time he had a bit more company with South Pointe’s Maurillio Saddoud posting a 51.72. Saddoud later powered to 100 breast victory in 57.74.

In the splash and dash South Aiken’s Reid Chafin raced to a 21.79. South Aiken made it a 1-2 punch as Ethan Hirsch followed in 22.21, ahead of Lancaster’s Samuel Page (22.40).

AC Flora’s Edwards’ second gold of the day came in the 100 freestyle, with his 47.28.

Powering ahead in the 500 free was St. James’ Casey Mitchell (4:45.85). It was a tie for second as Myrtle Beach’s Ian Morgan and AC Flora’s Brooks both hit the wall in 4:52.42.

Four boys were within four tenths in the 100 back. South Aiken’s Michael Robinson earned the victory with his 53.42. Paige (53.72) and Mitchell (53.81) both added a piece of hardware for the afternoon.

After a dominant showing in the 50 free, South Aiken’s Chafin and Hirsch bookended a dominant 200 freestyle relay that finished in 1:28.00. Swimming the second and third legs were Jacob Buck and Robinson. The crew stretched their sprints a bit further to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.02), just holding off Eastside’s Brooks, Weaver, Dawson Kramer, and Smith (3:16.32).
