Drexel Breaks Meet Record On Night One Of CAA Championships

The first day of the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association men’s and women’s Swimming and Diving Championships began at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

2017 CAA Championships Day 1 Finals – Results

Women’s 200 Medley Relay:

Drexel began the meet by winning the 200 medley relay. The Dragons team of Alexa Kutch (24.92), Rachel Bernhardt (27.23), April Forsthoffer (24.27), and Claudia Duguay (23.19) broke the previous league and meet record. The old meet record was set back in 2010 while the former league record was last set in 2013.

Northeastern was also under the previous meet record, taking third in 1:40.31. William and Mary finished third in 1:40.67.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay:

On their quest to three-peat, the William and Mary men won the first event. The team of Wyatt Grubb (22.82), Alex Montes de Oca (25.03), Evan Baker (20.98), and Colin Wright (19.11) touched in a time of 1:27.94, half a second off the record.

Towson finished second in 1:28.74 and UNCW took third in 1:29.80.

Women’s 3m Diving:

James Madison took the top two spots in the first diving event of the weekend. Senior Olivia Lehman, last year’s CAA Diver of the Year, took gold with 310.65 points as the only diver to crack 300 points.

Lehman’s teammate Carlyn McNeely posted a score of 296.00 for silver while Northeastern’s Alyssa Seales grabbed bronze with 268.50 points.

Women’s 800 Free Relay:

James Madison’s Katie Parker (1:48.87), Emma Gourdie (1:51.14), Shannon Harper (1:48.49), and Bonnie Zhang (1:47.40) won the 800 free relay in 7:15.90, nearly three seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

William and Mary took second in 7:18.61 and Towson finished third in 7:20.85.

Men’s 800 Free Relay:

William and Mary swept both relays tonight as the team of Alex Henderson (1:39.24), Eric Grimes (1:39.03), Tommy Kealy (1:37.74), and Joseph Eiden (1:36.34) stopped the clock in 6:32.35.

Drexel finished a close second in 6:32.72 while Towson finished third in 6:36.96.
