Drew Modrov Takes Two at Ithaca Sectionals Night Three

On night three of Speedo Sectionals Ithaca Kate Douglass, the 15-16 50 freestyle National Age Group record holder, posted an impressive time in the splash and dash. Hauppauge’s 27 year old Drew Modrov was quick enough to win two events on the men’s side.

Weston beat Chelsea Piers for the women’s 200 medley relay title by a mere tenth: 1:43.23 to 1:43.32. Asphalt Green touched third in 1:43.82.

Crimson Aquatics’ Anna Feng got the individual events rolling by breaking two minutes in the 200 butterfly. The 16 year old stopped the clock in 1:59.94. Isabel Gormley of Asphalt Green touched second in 2:00.70. Victor Swim Club’s Megan Deuel finished third. The 14 year old posted a 2:01.38.

Gormley moved up a spot on the podium as she won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.05. The 15 year old led a young final that included two 14 year olds. One of those was Portland Porpoise’s Emily Ecker (4:51.29) who finished third just behind Chelsea Piers’ Elizabeth Boeckman (4:51.09).

A pair of 15 year olds topped the 50 freestyle. Douglass, swimming unattached, was well ahead of the field in 22.24. That time is just two tenths shy of her own National Age Group record she shares with Simone Manuel. Behind her was Chelsea Piers’ Bridgey Semenuk in 23.05. Snagging third was Quinn Scannell (23.28) of Badger.

Carly Cummings of Badger edged Weston’s Sophie Angus for the 200 breaststroke title as the two touched in 2:12.18 and 2:12.75. Fresh off her 50 freestyle Douglass was third in 2:13.16.

Central Jersey’s Caroline Gmelich led three women under 55 in the 100 back with her 54.18. Scannell touched second (54.67) just ahead of Edge’s 15 year old Ella Miller (54.74).

Asphalt Green posted a 3:26.75 to win the 400 freestyle relay. Schenectady was second in 3:28.61 while Victor Swim Club was third with a 3:29.41.

In the men’s meet, Hauppauge Athletic Association clocked a 1:32.14 to win the 200 medley relay. The team from Chelsea Piers was second in 1:32.92 while Easter Express grabbed third with a 1:33.50.

Matthew Yish was first to the wall in the 200 butterfly. The 16 year old from Solo Aquatics touched in 1:48.26, just under a second ahead of Schenectady’s Zachary Zwijacz in 1:49.12. Finishing third was Liam Cosgrove of New Jersey Race Club (1:50.12).

Modrov raced to a 20.05 in the 50 free. Yish was back again, earning second in 20.72. Eastern Express’ Vincent Marciano placed third with a 20.85.

Modrov topped the podium again, this time with a 48.84 100 backstroke. Patriot Swim Club’s Andrew Carbone (49.09) and Kingfish’ Auston Ramsay (49.31) placed second and third.

Two 17 year olds cracked two minutes in the 200 breaststroke: Crimson’s Calvin Yang (1:58.10) and Laguardia’s Evan Zhang (1:59.94). Matchpoint’s Oleksandr Bezuglyy finished third (2:01.85).

Badger’s Andrew Babyak continued his successful weekend campaign, winning the 500 free in 4:27.30. Upper Valley’s Kristian Hansen beat Victor Swim Club’s Kai Wisner 4:31.45 to 4:31.70 for second.

The 400 freestyle relay title went to Adirondack Bluefins with a 3:05.16. Kingfish was second (3:06.63) while Eastern Express finished third (3:07.63).
