Distance Shines at YMCA Masters National Swimming Championships

The 2018 YMCA Masters National Swimming Championships brought a vast array of swimmers to Fort Lauderdale — swimmers from their 20s all the way to their 90s.

The YMCA of South Florida scored 1,951 points to lead the field. Sarasota was second (1,701), followed by Westport/Weston CT YMCA (1,604), Chesapeake YMCA (1,541) and South Family YMCA-Kettering rounded out the top five at 1,404.

The top-scorer was Nancy Brown (80-84), who scored 108 points in 12 events.

Dan Garrick-Glaser (25-29) led the men’s scorers for the meet with 105 points in 12 events.

Michael Laux (74-79) had 97 points in 11 events, while Fred Salzmann (85-90) had 96 points in 12 events. Timothy Shead (65-69) had 90 points in 11 events, while John Collings (90-94) and Jack Groselle (60-64) each scored 91 points in nine events.

The distance events were the most impressive of the meet, especially in the upper age brackets.

Women’s 1650 Free

Cara Cannilla won the 1650 free in the 18-24 bracket at 20:0.81. Julia Courtney won at 25-29 (20:39.19) and Melissa Wideman won the 30-34 (22:49.30).

Men’s 1650 Free

In the men’s 1,650 free, Brodie Hynes won the 40-44 (19:43.35), Ramses Rodriguez won the 45-49 (17:58.60), Jeff Sargent won 50-54 (19:29.46), Jerry De Muro won 60-64 (18:31.64), Mark Modjeska won 65-59 (20:51.57), Craig Kugler won 80-84 (40:12.04) and Fred Salzmann won 85-89 (38:15.07).

Women’s 1000 Free

In the women’s 1000 free, Stephanie Heatley won the 25-29 (11:44.10), Melissa Wideman won the 30-34 (12:26.52), Areli Nancarrow-Ibarra won the 35-39 (13:15.73), Melissa Nordquist won the 45-59 (12:15.07), Susie Shuck won the 50-54 (11:47.36), Barb Riazzi won 55-59 (13:00.46), Karen Einsidler won 60-65 (12:07.71), Joan Crafty won 65-69 (13:43.73), Carol Guibord won 70-74 (17:17.48), Luise Easton won 75-79 (20:55.05) and Martha Henderson won 80-84 (21:26.10).

Men’s 1000 Free

In the men’s 1000 free, Dan Glaser-Garbrick won the 25-29 (9:58.57), William Kloppe won 35-59 (10:53.06), John Decker won 40-44 (11:15.25), Andrew Farrell won 45-49 (11:10.06), Ricardo Valdivia won 50-54 (10:06.92), John Grzezczak won 55-59 (14:14.84), Franklin Halley won 60-64 (11:30.50), Mark Modjeska won 65-69 (12:25.57), Frank McElroy won 70-74 (12:26.16), Michael Laux won 75-79 (16:06.28), William T. Kirwan won 80-84 (23:20.41), Fred Salzmann won 85-89 (23:47.88) and John Collings won 90-94 (43:30.09).
