Desert Hills Boys, Park City Girls Victorious at Utah 4A HS States

At the 2019 Utah High School 4A state championships Desert Hills won the men’s meet by a narrow margin, with 273 points over Mountain Crest’s 247. Park City won the women’s meet with 355 points to Sky View’s 257 points.

Women

Park City led from the get-go. Helena Djunic, Jessi Beyer, Katie Hale, and Elise Beller won the 200 medley relay in 1:49.05.

Djunic, only a freshman, then clocked a 1:53.76 to win the 200 freestyle by four seconds. Beller made it three for three for Park City, winning the 200 IM with a 2:09.16. Hale kept the momentum rolling, winning the 50 freestyle with a 24.13. Also under 25 were Leah Gale (24.62) of Orem and Mya Ottenschot (24.95) of Desert Hills. Hale cleared a minute in the 100 fly, winning the event in 58.43.

Djunic stopped the clock in 52.50 for the 100 freestyle victory. Sky View’s Megan Brimhall finished second in 53.94.

After winning the 200 IM, Beller also won the 500 freestyle by five seconds with a 5:13.18.

Desert Hills got a victory in the 200 freestyle relay. Trinity Schimbeck, Caitlin Romprey, Molly McCoy, and Ottenschot touched in 1:42.21, four tenths ahead of Sky View in 1:42.66.

Romprey carried that relay momentum into a win in the 100 backstroke. The freshman swam a 58.13. Cedar City’s Elisa Price (58.86) and Gale (58.88) were also under 59 seconds.

Addison Richards, a sophomore from Orem, won the 100 breaststroke in a 1:07.29.

Park City ended the meet where they began- on the top of the podium- and by a large margin. Hale, Emma Strong-Conklin, Beller, and Djunic swam a 3:35.87 400 freestyle relay to win by seven seconds.

Men

Desert Hills won a tight relay to open the meet. Payton Plumb, Talon Shakespear, Ashton Anderson, and Trevor Larson touched in 1:40.26, just quicker than Juan Diego Catholic’s William Anderson, Alexander Gustat, Ian Pascual, and JR Gustat in 1:40.38. Lehi High School’s Jason Pittard, Tyler Wilde, Nic Tronson, and Maxwell Holdsworth were also just behind, in third with a 1:40.47.

Hurricane High’s Ryan Bunn topped the 200 free in 1:43.62. Plumb added to his relay gold with a 200 IM victory in 1:56.32. Park City’s Cole Peterson (1:58.52) was runner up.

The 50 freestyle went to Cade Black, a senior at Mountain Crest, in 21.54. On his tail was Park City’s Dennis Djunic (21.77), Desert Hills’ Anderson (21.91), and Keegan Wawrzyniak (21.92). Black won the 100 free in 47.40, with Wawrzyniak second in 47.82 and Pittard third in 47.92.

Tronson won the 100 fly in 51.77, after swimming the fly leg of Lehi’s third place medley relay. Bunn was runner up in 51.90 while Sky View’s Jake Walters finished third (52.26). Walters won the 100 back in 50.67. Payton Plumb was second in 51.18 and Peterson was third (52.49).

Three men were under five minutes in the 500 free: Sky View’s Darwin Anderson (4:44.81), Spanish Fork’s Austin Butler (4:47.92), and Park City’s Jack Troxel (4:49.12).

Anderson, Larson, Noah Ashton, and Wawrzyniak swam a 1:28.00 to win the 200 freestyle relay for Desert Hills.

Cedar City’s Garrett Dotson broke a minute to win the 100 breaststroke in 59.80.

Desert Hills completed a relay trifecta as Larson, Ashton, Wawrzyniak, and Plumb won the 400 free relay in 3:14.59.
