Daniel Hunter Sets Meet Record at Day 2 of Oceania Championships

Day two of pool racing at the 2016 Oceania Championships in Fiji featured one meet record, a few repeat medal winners, and some close races.

A meet record fell in the men’s 100 freestyle as New Zealand’s Daniel Hunter stopped the clock in 49.49, well faster than the 2008 record of 49.83. His teammate Julian Weir was third with a 50.85 and Australia’s Jake Kersten touched second in 50.13.

The Australians started the night off with a bang, taking the top two spots in the women’s 400 IM. Acacia Wildin-Snedden posted a 4:49.84, ahead of teammate Bec Cross‘ 4:54.64. Yeonsu Lee of New Zealand finished third in 5:05.38.

New Zealand fired back in the men’s event as Andrew Trembath and Blake Gunn seized gold and silver in 4:32.82 and 4:35.97. Third went to Brandon Schuster in 4:36.13.

Gabrielle Fa’amausili of New Zealand took her second backstroke title of the week with a 29.19 50 backstroke. Second went to Australian Abby Duncan (29.77) while her teammate Mikaela Cornelissen was just over the 30 second mark in 30.09.

In the men’s 50 backstroke, Zac Incerti of Australia stopped the clock in 25.91. Silver went to Papau New Guinea’s Ryan Pini in 26.43 and New Zealand’s Bayley Main was third in 26.43.

Helena Gasson grabbed gold in 56.49 in the women’s 100 freestyle. Her New Zealand teammate Carina Doyle tied for second with Australia’s Natasha Ramsden in 57.11.

Bronagh Ryan of New Zealand out touched 16 year old Cross for the 100 breaststroke title- 1:11.71 to 1:11.90. Another 16 year old, Ellie Eastwood of New Zealand finished third in 1:14.61.

The men’s 100 breaststroke was an even tighter battle. Jacob Garrod of New Zealand stopped the clock in 1:03.31 and Guam’s Benji Schulte touched next in 1:03.46. The fight for bronze was close as well between Australian’s Nathan Zhu and Zac Stubblety-Cook who finished in 1:03.94 and 1:04.02.

New Zealand’s Fa’amausili, Jacob GarrodEmily Rennell, and Daniel Hunter earned 200 mixed medley relay gold in 1:48.65. A team from New Zealand also took the women’s 800 freestyle relay as Gasson, Carina Doyle, Lee, and Monique King finished in 8:17.78.

Australians Kersetn, Bryan PoonThomas Wotton, and Zac Incerti touched in 7:27.19.
