Daniel Hein Breaks State Record In Prelims Of 2016 Illinois Boys State Championships

The 2016 Illinois Boys High School State Championships kicked off yesterday with quick swims in prelims.

Daniel Hein of DeKalb delivered a scorching 47.97 in prelims of the 100 back to grab not only the top seed but also a new state record. Hein’s time overturned the previous record of 48.07 set just last year by Max St. George.

Hein also turned in the top time in the 100 fly posting a swift 47.92. Hinsdale Central’s Franco Reyes grabbed second with a time of 48.60, while Metea Valley’s Alex Dillman finished third with a 49.81.

Notre Dame’s Colton Paulson and Lake Forest’s Dylan Boyd battled for the top seed in the 200 free with both turning in times under 1:40. Paulson nabbed the top seed with a 1:39.13 over Boyd’s 1:39.92.

Paulson continued his middle-distance prowess with a top seed finish in the 500 free, stopping the clock at a 4:27.01. Glenbrook South’s Sam Iida touched second in prelims with a time of 4:28.34, while teammate Tommy Hagerty rounded out the top three with a 4:33.12.

Iida held off the competition in the 200 IM, finishing a slim .04 seconds ahead of Normal West’s Andrew Loy. Iida stopped the clock at a 1:50.32 over Loy’s 1:50.36. Naperville’s Scott Piper turned in a 1:50.44 for third.

The top three qualifiers in the 50 free all turned in times under the 21-second mark. McHenry’s Kevin Braun led the charge with a top qualifying time of 20.71. Notre Dame’s Sam Neaveill was a close second with a final time of 20.72. Champaign Central’s Payton Woods grabbed third with a time of 20.89.

Neaveill delivered a swift 44.87 to nab the first-place seed in the 100 free. St. Charles North’s Joe Myhre grabbed second in prelims with a 45.14, while Braun rounded out the top three with a 45.32.
