Calvyn Justus Among Top Seeds At Day One Of 2016 African Swimming Champs

The 12th CANA African Swimming Championships kickstarted today in Bloemfontein, South Africa. In their shortest prelims session of the meet many threw down quick times to move on to finals.

Gabi Grobler of South Africa and Amel Melih of Algeria delivered almost matching times in prelims of the women’s freestyle. Growler stopped the clock at a 59.02 over Melih’s 59.04 to return as the top seed for tonight’s final. Rounding out the top three was South Africa’s Samantha Labuschagne with a 1:00.27.

South Africa’s Alaric Basson topped the competition in prelims of the men’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.79.

Joining him in finals as the second place seed will be Hasan Yasser of Egypt with a 1:04.84, while South Africa’s Michael Houlie and Zimbabwe’s James Lawson return tied for third with a 1:04.89.

Calvyn Justus of South Africa and Marwan Elamrawy posted matching times of 1:54.19 in the men’s 200 free prelims. The two return as the top seeds for finals. Myles Brown of South Africa completes the top three with a 1:55.05 as the third place seed.

The morning session concluded with Jacques van Wyk of South Africa dashing ahead of the competition in the men’s 50 back. Van Wyk turned in the top time of the morning with a 27.10, while the Morocco’s Driss Lahrichi posted a 27.61–good for second.

Egypt’s Mohamed Samy turned in a 28.50 to return as the third place seed.
