Caitlyn Snyder, Michael Jia Both Double Winners at CIF Central Division 1 Meet

At the 2017 CIF Central Section Division 1 Championships a few Clovis schools dominated the action on both sides.

Women

Clovis West dominated with 479 points to Clovis North’s 332 and Buchanan’s 312.5.

The Clovis West squad of Abby SamanskyCaitlyn SnyderHannah Lambert, and Skylar Elkington turned in a 1:46.79 to win the 200 medley relay.

The team picked up individual wins from Samansky in the 200 free (1:51.07) and Snyder in the 50 (23.81) and 100 (51.35) free. Samansky was second in 51.52 in the 100.

Averee Preble of Clovis topped the 200 IM (2:03.31) as well as the 500 free. The sophomore was the only swimmer under five minutes with her 4:57.10. Her teammate Adie Collard raced to a 57.54 to win the 100 butterfly.

Snyder and Elkington returned to the top of the podium along with Jordan Gruce and Allyson Clague in the 200 freestyle relay as they posted a 1:36.40.

Savannah Fitzgerald of Clovis North stopped the clock in 57.59 to win the 100 backstroke, just faster than Stephanie Bartel of Buchanan with a 57.75. Fitzgerald’s teammate Georgia Phillips won the final individual event, the 100 breaststroke, in 1:04.54.

Clovis West completed their dominating showing as Samansky, Jessica Schab, Clague, and Gruce combined for a 3:32.37 to take the 400 freestyle relay.

Men

Clovis North totaled 410 points. Clovis West scored 359 points and Buchanan turned in 330.5 points for third.

Clovis West won the 200 medley relay with the team of Hunter LaneTom SchabMatthew Renfro, and Tyler Cotton touching in 1:37.63.

Lane added an individual win for his team in the 200 IM when he touched in 1:53.22.

Clovis’ Graham Hauss was first to the wall in the 200 freestyle with a 1:37.77. Hauss also won the 500 freestyle by over a second with his 4:32.77.

Champions Clovis North picked up individual victories from Michael Jia and Ben Forbes. Jia’s first gold was a 21.28 50 freestyle. He also touched first in the 100 butterfly (50.09). Forbes clocked a 46.42 in the 100 free. Forbes teamed up with Bodhi BowdenEvan Belli, and Jia to top the 200 free relay in 1:26.15.

In 53.38 Julia Alcantar of Liberty earned the 100 backstroke section title. Buchanan’s Noah Hickman cruised under a minute in the 100 breaststtoke, stopping the clock in 57.77.

The session finished with one last victory for Clovis North. The team of Forbes, Belli, Cole Fleming, and Jia touched four seconds ahead of the competition with a 3:08.55.
