Anacortes Wins Close Washington High School 2A State Meet

Anacortes scored 249 points to win the 2018 Washington High School 2A swimming and diving state championships. Liberty (Renton) was second with 241 points while Kingston scored 236.5 points. Olympic was fourth with 231.

Kingston won the opening relay, leading three teams under the meet record. Timothy Gallagher, Aaron Markow, Quincy Walker, and Ethan Fox took gold in 1:33.55. Columbia River’s Rob Mead, Josh Bottelberghe, Elijah Parish, and Ben Phelps tied for second in 1:36.34 with Anacortes’ Emmett Moore, Jacob Hoxie, Beau Omdal, and James Drew.

Bottleberghe then won the 200 freestyle for Anacortes in 1:40.13. He also took the 100 breaststroke in a meet record 54.43.

After leading off the winning relay, Gallagher also set a meet record in the 200 IM with his 1:50.10. The junior picked up another meet record in the 100 backstroke, lowering his own mark, with a 49.42.

Olympia freshman Dietrich Meyer won the 50 freestyle in 21.50, just ahead of Steilacoom’s senior Steven Froehle in 21.53. Meyer also topped the 100 freestyle with a 46.56, a new meet record time. Columbia River’s Mead was runner up (46.68) and Fox (47.07) touched third.

Another meet record went down in the 100 butterfly. Moore, Anacortes’ backstroker won the event in 49.94.

Ross Burchell won the 500 freestyle for Olympia with a 4:33.46.

Two teams were under the meet record in the 200 freestyle relay. The mark went to Columbia River’s Bottelberghe, Parish, Phelps, and Mead in 1:27.29. Olympia’s Haakon Meyer, Tiernann Shelton, Burchell, and Meyer were second in 1:28.17.

In the final event of the meet one more meet record went down. Kingston’s Fox, Bryce Hoffer, Walker, and Gallagher won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:12.91 to secure the state championships.
