Ames Powers To State Title At Iowa High School Swimming & Diving Championships

The Iowa high school girls state swimming and diving competition transpired yesterday with Ames claiming first place. Ames finished first with 341 points, while Johnston posted second with an accumulated 197 points. Bettendorf rounded out the top three with 189 points, their highest showing since 2010.

Ames got off to a quick start with a new state record in the 200 medley relay. The relay team of Jazlyn Horras (26.97), Molly Winer (29.39), Grace Snyder (24.44), and Sophie Sorenson (22.98) delivered a combined time of 1:43.78, well under the previous state record of 1:45.50 (Ames, 2013).

Johnston and Bettendorf followed with second and third place relay finishes of 1:46.49 and 1:46.81 respectively.

MyKenzie Leehy of Lewis Central topped the 200 free with a final time of 1:49.94, just ahead of Muscatine’s Taylor Beadle and her time of 1:50.36. Dowling Catholic’s Clare Culver completed the top three with a 1:52.40.

The 200 IM saw big time drops from the top three finishers. Johnston’s Lexi Horner led the way with a 2:02.31, shaving more than four seconds off her seed time of 2:06.93. Sorenson of Ames picked up second with a 2:03.15, while Dubuque Wahlert’s Victoria Michel was third with a 2:08.98.

Seniors topped the podium in the 50 free finals with Muscatine’s Sarah Schemmel coming out on top. Schemmel posted a 23.11 for the gold. Johnston’s Lexie Winnett and Ankeny’s Jasmine Rumley delivered close times of 23.31 and 23.40 for second and third respectively.

Kelsey Drake of Linn-Mar flirted with a sub-55 second swim in the 100 fly, stopping the clock at a 55.13 for first. Berit Quass of Dowling Catholic made her state debut with a 55.40 for second, while senior Sam Fritz of Fairfield took third with a 56.89.

Leehy pegged her second individual win of the day with a 50.29 finish in the 100 free. Ames’ Amy Feddersen added a close finish of 50.34, while Schemmel held a close third of 50.39. All three received automatic consideration for All-American by posting times beneath a 50.50.

Quass added a gold medal to her silver with a 4:58.50 showing in the 500 free, making her the only athlete underneath the 5-minute mark. Dowling Catholic’s Clare Culver grabbed second with a 5:01.83, while third went to Southeast Polk’s Lauryn Schieffe (5:02.80).

The relay quad of Amy Feddersen (23.49), Winer (23.99), Sabrina Hegelheimer (23.98), and Snyder (23.42) delivered another relay gold for Ames with a combined time of 1:34.88. Ankeny’s Nikki Ault (25.28), Christina Ware (24.44), Sarah Shafer (23.87), and Rumley (22.95) posted a combined time of 1:36.54 for second, while Johnston completed the podium with a 1:37.40 finish.

Sorenson led Ames’ sweep of the podium for the 100 back with a 54.61 showing. Teammates Sarah Bell and Horras posted times of 56.79 and 57.08 for second and third respectively.

A trio of seniors topped the podium of the 100 breaststroke, led by Johnsotn’s Lexi Horner and her time of 1:03.75. Linn-Mar’s Drake added a 1:04.23 finish for second, just ahead of Bettendorf’s Sage Ohlenshele and her time of 1:05.13.

Ames completed the day by adding a final relay win in the 400 free relay. Sorenson (51.74), Olivia Jenks (53.54), Morgan Rosser (53.51), and Feddersen (49.95) posted a combined 3:28.74 for first. Waukee finished second overall with a 3:31.44, followed by Bettendorf’s 3:33.07.
