The North Carolina State Wolfpack won the team’s third consecutive conference title at the men’s ACC championships, completing the effort in dominant fashion during the final session. The win gave head coach Braden Holloway this title in half of his six seasons at the helm in Raleigh and a sweep of the women’s and men’s team titles this season.

It came no surprise when NC State junior Ryan Held was named Most Valuable Swimmer after he captured three individual victories, two in conference record-time, and led NC State to four relay titles.

Louisville finished second, while Notre Dame, in the first season with Mike Litzinger in charge of the men’s program, finished third.

Final scores:

  1. North Carolina State 1297.5
  2. Louisville 1134
  3. Notre Dame 923.5
  4. Virginia Tech 883.5
  5. Florida State 730
  6. Virginia 709.5
  7. North Carolina 700
  8. Duke 607
  9. Georgia Tech 576
  10. Pittsburgh 513
  11. Boston College 167
  12. Miami 108

Louisville’s Marcelo Acosta swam neck-and-neck with NC State’s Anton Ipsen for most of the race, but the Louisville sophomore pulled away from the two-time defending conference champion over the final 100 yards to win his first conference title.

Acosta came in at 14:33.68, the third-ranked time in the country behind Michigan’s Felix Auboeck and Texas’ Clark Smith. Acosta also broke the ACC record of 14:35.12 set by Virginia’s Matt McLean in 2009.

Ipsen settled for second in 14:35.89, good for sixth in the country and all but assuring him a spot in the top heat at the NCAA championships next month. He was joined on the podium by teammate Adam Linker, who posted a time of 14:45.43.

After finishing second in both the 500 free and 400 IM, North Carolina’s Henry Campbell finished fourth in the mile in 14:54.16. Virginia Tech’s Michael Craddock edged out Notre Dame’s Richard Mannix for fifth, 15:07.16 to 15:07.47, and Duke placed two men in the top eight with Matt Johnson (15:07.72) and Roger Kriegl (15:08.78).

NC State’s Hennessey Stuart established a big lead early in the race and was more than a half-second ahead of Louisville’s Grigory Tarasevich at the halfway point, but Tarasevich closed that gap and then went by Stuart off the final wall to complete the sweep of the backstroke events.

Tarasevich finished in 1:39.05, a new ACC meet record but just off Stuart’s conference record of 1:38.56 from last season. Stuart came in at 1:39.47. The duo improved to No. 2 and No. 3 in the country this season, with only Ryan Murphy faster.

NC State didn’t get first place points, but the Wolfpack finished second and third with Stuart and Justin Ress, who finished in 1:40.42, almost a half-second ahead of Virginia Tech’s Robert Owen (1:40.88).

Notre Dame’s Robert Whitacre finished fifth in 1:41.07, and North Carolina’s Jorden Merrilees took sixth in 1:41.58. Also making the A-final were Louisville’s Aaron Greene (1:42.80) and Virginia’s Joe Clark (1:45.04).

NC State’s Ryan Held won his third race of the meet, and just like his victories in the 50 free and 100 fly, it came in dominant fashion. Held posted a time of 41.61, clipping his own ACC meet record from last year and improving to third in the country this season behind his Olympic relay teammates Caeleb Dressel and Blake Pieroni.

Held won the race by more than a second as Notre Dame’s Tabahn Afrik and Virginia’s John Whiteside tied for second in 42.86. Held’s NC State teammates finished fourth, fifth and eighth: Soren Dahl (42.89), Joe Bonk (42.96) and Scott Johnson (43.51).

Also swimming in the championship final were Notre Dame’s Daniel Speers (43.09) and  Mattias Lindenbauer (43.46).

Notably, three swimmers broke 43 in the B-final: Notre Dame’s Justin Plaschka (42.78), Louisville’s Trevor Carroll (42.87) and NC State’s Andreas Schiellerp (42.91).

200 breast

Virginia Tech’s Brandon Fiala completed the breaststroke sweep and took down the conference record as he won the 200 breast title for a second-straight year. He finished in 1:52.39, good for third in the country this year and well ahead of Thomas Dahlia’s ACC record of 1:52.68 and Fiala’s own meet record of 1:52.87 from last year.

Louisville’s Carlos Claverie swam a strong race and was less than a tenth behind at the 150, but he ended up fading to third in 1:53.19. Georgia Tech’s Moises Loschi snuck in for second with a 29.59 final split, and Loschi finished in 1:53.08.

Notre Dame’s Trent Jackson finished just off the pace in fourth, posting a time of 1:53.52, and North Carolina’s Michael McBryan grabbed fifth in 1:54.68. Duke’s Peter Kropp faded to fifth in 1:55.19, and he was followed by UNC’s Craig Emslie (1:55.67) and Virginia Tech’s Zachary Switzer (1:56.33).
