2016 Utah High School State Championships: North Summit Boys, Grand County Girls Win 2A State Titles

At the conclusion of day one at BYU’s aquatic center, the 2A Classification has completed all timed finals, and North Summit High School has come out on top for the men’s side with 250 points, and Grand County High School takes the title among the women with a score of 237.

Lighting up the pool in the first event, the Women’s 200 Medley Relay, was Grand County High School (Kimmerle, Richards, Richards, and Pierce) who shattered their entry time by over seven seconds and touched first with a time of 1:59.87.

North Summit High School’s team of Hellander, Scholes, Crittenden, and Crittenden took the title in that same event with a time of 1:49.41, followed by Emery High School and South Summit High School.

Up next came the Men’s and Women’s 200 Freestyle, where Grand County’s Alexa Pierce touched first, leading the rest of the field by over sixteen seconds, and Braxten Pierce (1:51.95) out touched McKinley Card (1:52.06) in a close race up to the finish. Pierce and Card were followed by Morgon Abbott who came in at 2:01.82.

Pierce made waves in the pool with another appearance in the Men’s 500 Freestyle, where he came in with a 5:18.00, winning the event.

Swimmers who took titles in the Men’s and Women’s 200 IM were Rowland Hall High School’s Julia Sanderson (2:16.77) and Summit Academy’s Johan Boer (2:10.98).

Boer came back in the Men’s 100 Backstroke and won with a time of 57.13.

Sanderson made another appearance at the head of the pack in the Women’s 500 Freestyle, winning the event with a time of 5:18.14.

Telos Academy High School’s Elliot Watt took two individual titles in the 50 Freestyle (21.73) and 100 Freestyle (48.32).

The Women’s 200 Freestyle Relay was dominated by Rowland Hall High School’s team of Puri, HannahGoh, and Sanderson coming in at 1:51.50. The Men’s 200 Freestyle Relay was a tight race across the board, with Emery High School’s team of Gilbert, Guymon, Wright, and Guymon (1:38.56) touching first, followed by Rowland Hall (Landau, Fort, Goh, and Murphy) touching at 1:39.25 and Grand County (Hackney, Shumway, Park, and Pierce) rounding off the top three at 1:42.51.

Other individual event winners in the 2A Classification include Drew Roper (50 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke), Alexa Pierce and Jayden Grose (100 Butterfly), Mary Kimmerle (100 Freestyle), and Jessica Rasmussen and Eisley Scholes (100 Breaststroke).

Grand County High School’s ladies (Pierce, Richards, Richards, and Kimmerle) took first in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:54.50, followed by Rowland Hall’s Goh, Puri, Chamberlain, and Sanderson (4:11.53) and Emery’s Carter, Oliverson, Celis, and Allinson (4:19.84). On the men’s side, North Summit’s team of Scholes, Crittenden, Hellander, and Crittenden took first at 3:36.15, followed by Rowland Hall (Goh, Basic, Fort, and Murphy) at 3:38.53 and Emery (Gilbert, Willson, Stilson, and Guymon) at 3:38.82.

Taking the pool later in the evening was the 5A Classification, swimming the first half of their events.

Kicking off the session, Cottonwood High School slides into first place in the Women’s 200 Medley Relay with their team of White, Price, Anders, and Dib at a time of 1:50.66. Cottonwood was followed closely by Viewmont High School (Smith, Gassaway, Gassaway, and Schwendeman) at 1:50.71 and Brighton High School (Butler, Binder, VanBrocklin, and Hibbard) at 1:52.01.

Up next, the Men’s 200 Medley Relay was another close race with Brighton’s Harries, Binder, Wiest, and O’Neal (1:34.71) touching first, only slightly ahead of Cottonwood High School (Arroyo, Simon, Roundy, and Simon) then followed Viewmont High School (Hunt, Sannar, Julien, and Bonner) in third for that event.

Individual event winners for the evening include Autumn Wolfgram and Drew Bonner (200 Freestyle), Rachel Butler and Jonah Simon (200 IM), and Kenzie Ford and Kimble Peterson (50 Freestyle).
