Live coverage of day two finals of the 2016 German Nationals. Hit refresh for the latest coverage. The only Olympic event on today’s schedule is the 400 freestyle.

Women’s 50 Backstroke

Johanna Ross improved on her prelims leading time, and was the top finisher in 28.45. Nadine Laemmier touched second in 28.76, while Laura Riedemann and Lisa Graf each touched .01 behind one another, finishing in 28.77 and 28.78.

Riedemann’s time was a German Age Group record for the 18 year old.

Men’s 50 Backstroke

This morning Jan-Philip Glania posted the world’s ninth best 50 backstroke this year, finishing in 25.05, but he did not swim the event tonight. Marco di Carli took gold with a 25.43.

Carl Louis Black was just behind in 25.48 for runner up honors. Mark Ulrich ended up with the bronze by an even smaller margin, finishing .02 behind in 25.50.

Women’s 50 Breaststroke

Laura Simon was first to the wall in 31.73. Caroline Ruhnau out touched Alice Ruhnau 32.01 to 32.02 to complete the podium.

Men’s 50 Breaststroke

Fabian Schwingenschlogl posted the world’s seventh best time to earn the title in the men’s 50 breaststroke. Erik Steinhagen touched second in 27.89. Nils Wich-Glasen completed the podium with his 28.04.

Women’s 400 freestyle

Sarah Kohler came away with another distance victory, touching in 4:06.65. While she lead at the 200, three other women were within one and a half seconds of her. That time is the 11th best in the world this year. Kohler was the only swimmer to clear the German finals standard to be considered for Olympic nomination.

Johanna Friedrich stayed incredibly close the entire way, until Kohler’s blazing final 50 meters when she pulled ahead. Friedrich finished in 4:09.52. That time was painfully close to the finals Olympic standard of 4:09.08, after she had cleared the prelims hurdle.

Third place went to Leonie Antonia Beck with a 4:10.81.

Men’s 400 Freestyle 

Florian Vogel led the morning in 3:46.31, the seventh best time in the world this year. Clemens Rapp posted a 3:49.29 this morning, as both were faster than the 3:50.04 necessary prelims time for Olympic qualification.

Tonight, Vogel led Rapp by a second at the halfway mark and grew his lead to two and a half seconds at the 300 mark. Vogel finished the event in a 3:44.89, the fifth best time in the world this year, and well under the 3:47.49 necessary in finals for German Olympic qualification.

Rapp finished painfully close to the necessary Olympic standard, touching just .04 away in 3:47.53, to earn silver.

Third place went to Poul Zellmann in 3:48.88.

Women’s 50 Butterfly

The top three finishers were well ahead of the field, but very close together. Dorthea Brandt got her hands on the wall first, stopping the clock in 26.02. That is the world’s eighth best time this year. Aliena Schmitdke earned silver in 26.08. Bronze went to Alexandra Wenk in 26.17.

 Men’s 50 Butterfly

The top four swimmers broke through the 24 second barrier. Bjorn Hornikel finished first in 23.63, the world’s ninth best time this year. Silver went to Steffen Deibler in 23.78. Damian Wierling was on his heels, earning bronze in 23.82. Jonas Bergmann finished in 23.98.
