2016 CANA African Swimming Championships: Day One Finals Recap

Women’s 100 Free:

Finals of the women’s 100 free was highlighted by another strong battle between Algeria’s Amel Melih and South Africa’s Gabi Grobler. The two posted the only sub-59 second swims, with Melih claiming victory with a final time of 58.28. Grobler settled for second with a time of 58.54.

Picking up third was South Africa’s Samantha Labuschagne with a final time of 59.38.

Egypt’s Rowan El Badry turned in a 1:00.53 for fourth, followed by close times from Angola’s Ana Nobrega (1:01.26) and Senegal’s Jeanne Boutbien (1:01.97).

Namibia’s Kiara Schatz and Mauritius’ Annah Auckburaullee finished seventh and eighth with times of 1:02.14 and 1:02.84 respectively.

Men’s 100 Breast:

Alaric Basson of South Africa maintained his spot atop the leaderboard in the men’s 100 breast with a final time of 1:03.12, dropping .67 seconds off his prelims time of 1:03.79.

Teammate Michael Houlie finished a close second with a time of 1:03.46, while Egypt’s Hassan Yasser took third with a 1:03.66.

James Lawson of Zimbabwe finished fourth overall with a 1:04.54, followed by Morocco’s Ahmed Reda Ennaim and his time of 1:06.85.

Mauritius’ Oliver Ah Ching (1:08.68), Zambia’s Alex Axiotis (1:08.85), and Senegal’s Adama Thiaw Ndir (1:09.95) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 400  IM:

South Africa’s Rebecca Meder posted the only sub-five minute swim in finals of the women’s 400 IM. Meder delivered a 4:58.51 to take home gold.

Rania Hamida Nefsi of Algeria finished second overall with a 5:02.58, while Egypt’s Rowaida Hexham was third with a 5:0551.

Algeria’s Souad Nefissa Cherouati grabbed fourth with a time of 5:13.25, ahead of South Africa’s Hanim Abrahams and her time of 5:21.86.

Antonia Roth of Namibia finished sixth with a time of 5:24.89, followed by Angola’s Raquel Tremoco’s 5:40.31.

Men’s 200 Free:

Myles Brown of South Africa rocketed to the top of the leaderboard in the men’s 200 free finals, dropping a staggering 4.12 seconds off his prelims swim. Brown touched with a final time of 1:50.93 for gold.

Marwan Elamrawy of Egypt took second overall with a 1:51.60, followed closely by South Africa’s Calvin Justus and his time of 1:51.92.

Mozambique’s Igor Mogne finished fourth overall with a 1:54.86, while Algeria’s Lounis Khendriche was fifth with a 1:57.67.

Mauritius’ Mathieu Marquet (1:59.05), Morocco’s Adil Assouab (2:00.24), and Senegal’s Ismael Eloit Kane (2:02.15) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s 50 Back:

Seychelle’s Alexus Laird topped the competition in finals of the women’s 50 back. Laird delivered a 30.68 to be the only athlete under the 31-second mark.

Algeria’s Amel Melih added a silver medal to her collection with a 31.08 finish.

Ingy Abouzaid of Egypt picked up a narrow third-place victory over South Africa’s Carissa van Rooyen. Abouzaid touched in a 31.72 over van Rooyen’s 31.73.

Egypt’s Mariam Sakr took fifth with a 31.93, followed by South Africa’s Khwezi Duma’s 32.49.

Gisela Cossa of Mozambique was seventh with a 33.78.

Men’s 50 Back:

Mohamed Samy of Egypt delivered the top time in finals of the men’s 50 back, stopping the clock at a 26.62.

South Africa’s Jacques van Wyk took second with a 27.12, followed closely by Mauritius’ Driss Lahrichi and his time of 27.59.

Keanu Silent of South Africa was fourth with a 28.88, followed by Angola’s Marcio Fernandes’ 30.59.

Senegal’s Adama Thiaw Ndir and Matar Samb picked up sixth and seventh respectively with times of 30.77 and 31.15.
