14-Year-Old Mia Rankin Wins 1650 at 2018 Phoenix Four Corners Speedo Sectionals

The 2018 Speedo Sectionals series for the Four Corners Championship in Phoenix, Arizona wrapped up this evening with competition in the 200-yard IM, 1650-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle, and 400-yard medley relay.

Breeja Larson won both the women’s 200-yard IM and 50-yard freestyle, Giles Smith won the 100-yard butterfly, and 14-year-old Mia Rankin took the title in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:30.28, a 13-second best time.

At the end of the evening, the battle for the team title between the three Arizona powerhouse teams, Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Mesa, finished with a victory for Scottsdale. They finished with 2731 points, ahead of runner-up host team Phoenix Swim Club with 1828 points. Third place went to Mesa Aquatics Club with a total of 1731.5 points.

Women’s 200 IM

Olympian Breeja Larson and Katie McBratney of Pitchfork Aquatic Club continued to battle each other, this time in the women’s 200-yard IM. The 17-year-old has finished runner-up to Larson a few times during the course of this meet, and delivered again this evening by touching in 2:01.43 to Larson’s winning time of 1:58.22. Sydney Carlson of Phoenix Swim Club earned bronze in 2:03.69.

Fourth place went to 13-year-old Mary Codevilla of Flatiron Athletic Club with her time of 2:03.85, while Pitchfork’s Destiny Kling earned fifth-place honors in 2:04.12.

13-year-old Chase Davison of Flatiron finished in 2:04.51 for sixth place, ahead of Kaitlyn McCoy of host team Phoenix Swim Club, who touched in 2:05.41 for seventh. Isabella Fratesi finished eighth with her time of 2:05.49.

Men’s 200 IM

Jadan Nabor of YMCA Westside Silverfins earned his second individual title of the weekend in the men’s 200-yard IM, dropping almost three seconds to overtake Pitchfork’s Jarod Arroyo for first place in 1:50.03. Arroyo touched second in 1:50.09. Third place went to Thomaz Martins of Pitchfork in 1:50.23.

ASU alum Juan Jose Garcia Mesa put up a time of 1:51.26 for fourth place, followed by Rio Salado Swim Club’s Benjamin Quon in 1:53.57 for fifth.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Michael Klauss earned sixth-place honors in 1:54.11, while his teammate Stefan Cooley touched seventh in 1:54.35.

Jordan Tiffany of Hilltop Aquatic Swim Team rounded out the championship final in eighth with a 1:54.89.

Women’s 1650 Freestyle

14-year-old Mia Rankin of Phoenix Swim Club won the women’s 1650-yard freestyle in a quick 16:30.28, a 13-second drop from her best time from December of this past year. Haley Benjamin of Durango Swim Club was just behind in 16:33.84 for the runner-up spot.

Lucille Matheson of Flatiron Athletic Club also finished under 17 minutes with a time of 16:59.69 for third-place honors. Fourth place went to Audrey McDonald of Park City Swimming in 17:03.16, followed by Jessica Lesueur of Mesa Aquatics Club in 17:11.28 for fifth.

Amanda Zajdzinski of Mesa (17:18.87), Grace Dunn of Scottsdale Aquatic Club (17:22.04), and Karla Lessing of Flatiron Athletic Club (17:22.56) also placed in the top eight of swimmers.

Men’s 1650 Freestyle

Scott Pekarske of Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics also dropped a chunk of time to win the event, finishing in 15:26.87 for the title. Arroyo completed a difficult double successfully, earning the runner-up spot in a time of 15:45.19. Third place went to 30-year-old Yoelvis Pedraza of RallySport Aquatic Club in 15:48.29.

Riley Babson of Tucson Ford Dealers put up a 15:53.76 for fourth place, followed by Pitchfork’s Alexis Soto in 15:55.14 for fifth.

Mesa Aquatics Club’s Kyle Benjamin was the last competitor under 16 minutes, finishing in 15:56.25 for sixth. Seventh place went to Cache Valley Marlins’ Darwin Anderson in 16:01.81, and eighth to Aidan Reagan of Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics in 16:04.44.

Women’s 50 Freestyle

Larson earned another win this evening, this time in the women’s 50-yard freestyle, with a 22.53. Claire Grover of Scottsdale Aquatic Club was also under 23 seconds, sprinting to a second-place time of 22.81. Grover had qualified first over Larson in 22.77 to Larson’s 22.79. Third place went to her teammate Greer Pattison in 23.49.

Sofia Zinis of Swim Dogs earned fourth place with her mark of 23.76. Fifth place went to Kathryn Hale of Park City Swimming in 23.80.

Olivia McPherson of Laramie Swim Club and Hannah Houlton of Tucson Ford Dealers tied for sixth place with a time of 23.85. Pilar Cohen of Boulder City Henderson Swim Team was just behind in eighth place in the heat with a 23.88.

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Giles Smith, who won the 100-yard butterfly last night, took another title in the men’s 50-yard freestyle, this time touching in 20.26 for the win. Lucas Farrar of Lake Country Swim Team earned runner-up honors with his mark of 20.57, followed by Martins in 20.71 for third.

Jared Shaw of Sahuarita Stingrays sprinted to a 20.78 to finish fourth in the heat, followed by Clay Stoddard in 20.91. Lake Country Swim Team’s Jeffrey Wiedoff was just off the 21-second barrier in 21.02, followed by Tai Combs in seventh with a 21.25. Eighth place went to Parker Hughes of Scottsdale Aquatic Club in 21.51.

Scottsdale’s Terry Yang would have placed sixth in the championship heat with his time of 20.97 from the B-final.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Scottsdale Aquatic Club proved their dominance in the women’s 400-yard medley relay, taking 1-2 with their A and B relay teams. The A team finished first in 3:44.99, followed by their B team in 3:46.89. Individual time splits were not available in results. Third place went to Flatiron Athletic Club in 3:48.46, followed by RallySport Aquatic Club in 3:50.49 for fourth.

Pitchfork Aquatics earned fifth place in 3:51.94, followed by host team Phoenix Swim Club in 3:52.56. Mesa Aquatics Club was just behind in 3:52.59 for seventh. Pitchfork Aquatics B team placed eighth with their time of 3:55.43.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

The Scottsdale men also won the men’s 400-yard medley relay, combining for a time of 3:21.54. Second place went to Pitchfork Aquatics in 3:24.61, followed by Lake Country Swim Team in 3:25.31.

Hilltop Aquatic Swim Team earned fourth-place honors with their mark of 3:28.21, followed by RallySport Aquatic Club in 3:29.47 for fifth.

Phoenix Swim Club’s C-team placed sixth in 3:30.12, ahead of Mesa Aquatics Club’s seventh-place time of 3:30.94. Eighth place went to Flying Fish Arizona Swim Team in 3:31.76.

What a tremendous meet for two event champion Jadan Nabor and the 14 year old two event champion Kennedy Noble of the West side Silver Fins!!! Such a great meet to watch! Everyone did an amazing job! Great swimming!
